it'll be the same as with gasoline and diesel. Eventually things will run low.

pittamon - First, no enterprise in their right mind would even think of significantly expanding existing plants or building a new chemical plant in non right-to-work states in this day and age. Second, the cost to operate a chemical plant increases as you look at plant sites further North from the Gulf Coast due to the greater number of cold days and the increased number of really cold days. Third, water borne transportation for raw materials and for finished product used to be and may still be the cheapest form of liquid (such as diesel, gasoline, crude oil, etcetara) or gaseous material product transportation followed by pipelines.
wshutton - The states made plenty of tax revenue from the "old, abandoned, and unused wells in the same oil formations" and the states themselves should be tasked with sealing these old wells. It is certainly not a responsibility of the companies currently operating in the gas and oil shale fields to plug these old, abandoned, and unused wells unless the wells belonged to these entities in the first place.

If we can get the frackers to seal old, abandoned, and unused wells in the same oil formations, fracking should work viably. Just as many straws draw from the same well, fracking pressure forces oil products out all straws, ready or not. Fracking a well field with abandoned wells blows the milkshake right out those wells.

There is no doubt that natural gas is turning some business models on their heads. Let's hope that prices come down, jobs become more plentiful and the free market has an opportunity to thrive. Maybe it will one day replace gasoline on a mainstream level.
If we're going to keep talking about natural gas, perhaps it's time for GasBuddy and SouthCarolinaGasPrices.com to have a "natural gas" tab at the top of their sections.

Looks like all the new jobs are in the central part of the country border to border. Just follow the pipelines.

The Law of Unintended Consequences CAN cut both ways. Normally it triggers negative repercussions, but it CAN spin positive benefits.
This might be one of the rare positive cases.
Much of the chemical industry (ESPECIALLY plastics) works with hydrocarbons. Very often, we start with petroleum and break the chemicals down into smaller chains (and then possibly recombine them into something other than the starting material). But you can start with simpler chemicals (and normally the natural gas products are smaller molecules than the petroleum stuff) and stitch them together.
So we have a WIN-WIN-WIN for every rational American.
Unfortunately, the Luddite Green Left isn't rational. Their crusade to halt fracking would trigger the normal result of the Law of Unintended Consequences - it would increase the number of things that cost MORE.
SO, we need to defeat the Luddite Green Left's war on fracking. How???
On Election Day - FIRE LIBERALS!!! (and do NOT hire new ones). Unemploying Obama should be HIGH on the list.

It will be an aid in our recovery if the government allows production to go forward. If they stop activity in favor of "Green Energy" then no help.
